(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 24 - Catania police on Wednesday carried
out an anti-Mafia operation to arrest 25 people, including the
suspected new Cosa Nostra boss in the Sicilian city.
The 25 suspects are allegedly top members of the Ercolano clan
which, together with the Santapaola clan, are believed to lead
the Mafia in Catania.
The operation followed the so-called Ombra probe coordinated by
DDA anti-mafia investigators in Catania.
The arrest warrants were issued on charges of Mafia association,
extortion, drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons,
usury and bodily harm aggravated by the use of firearms.
"With this operation, we have broken up the Santapaola-Ercolano
Mafia family, arresting the boss", said Catania flying squad
chief Antonino Sfameni, adding that several firearms were seized
as part of the operation. (ANSA).
