(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 20 - The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, on Tuesday told the opening event of the 45th edition of the Rimini Meeting that the war between Hamas and Israel has reached a "decisive moment" with ongoing talks brokered by the US, Egypt and Qatar, "The war will end, I hope that negotiations will solve something: I have my doubts, but this is the last train", stressed Pizzaballa.
"We can move towards a ceasefire, but also towards a degeneration.
"It is a key time", he noted, urging participants to pray .
"But the evil this war has produced, the reciprocal hatred, the resentment, the refusal to acknowledge the existence of the other will remain, and will have to engage us all", he told the Meeting for 'Friendship Among Peoples' organized by members of the Catholic activist group Comunione e Liberazione (Communion and Liberation, CL).
"The impact of this war on both populations, the Jews and Palestinians, is unique, unprecedented", he noted, adding that "this refusal of the existence of one another has become a daily issue, has circulated on the media, on social media, it has become truly dramatic".
The Rimini meeting wraps up on August 25. (ANSA).
