(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 16 - The body of Satnam Singh, a
31-year-old Indian farmhand who bled to death three months ago
when he was abandoned by his employer after a strawberry
wrapping machine severed his arm in Latina, will return to India
where his funeral will be celebrated , the Rome and Lazio
chapters of farmworkers' union Flai CGIL announced on Monday.
Singh's body had remained in Italy for three months while his
family tried to reach the country in vain because they were
unable to obtain a visa to attend the ceremony that was being
planned in the Lazio town of Cisterna where the worker lived
with his wife, the union said.
The death of the Sikh farm hand spurred outrage at
gangmastering, which is widespread in Italy, especially in the
south of the country, and modern forms of slavery.
The worker's employer Antonello Lovato, who dumped the bleeding
worker in front of his home and did not call an ambulance, was
later arrested in July on murder charges.
Unions, politicians and members of the Indian community staged
a big demonstration calling for action on Saturday in Latina, a
Mussolini-founded town south of Rome that is home to thousands
of migrant farm workers. (ANSA).
