Meloni tells Lebanese PM Italy is 'committed to ceasefire'

'Key role of Italians in UNIFIL, their security important'

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 1 - Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has spoken on the phone with her Lebanese counterpart Najib Mikati, Palazzo Chigi said Tuesday.
    "In renewing Italy's closeness to Lebanon and to the Lebanese people and in recalling the immediate first aid to the civilian population allocated yesterday by the government", the premier, explained the note, "stressed Italy's commitment to a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution to the conflict that allows the displaced to return to their homes".
    "Italy, also as rotating president of the G7, will continue to work for a de-escalation at a regional level", said the note.
    Meloni recalled the "crucial role of the Italian military present in southern Lebanon within the UNIFIL mission, stressing the importance of their security", the note concluded. (ANSA).
