(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 23 - Two guards were taken captive and
beaten and an inmate was taken to hospital with a cut ear lobe
and a broken arm after being the the victim of a "punitive
mission" by other prisoners during a night of violence at
Avellino jail, the Campania branch of the USPP warder's union
said on Wednesday.
The union blamed the "fragility" of the prison security system,
and a shortfall of around 60 guards at the jail.
There is widespread concern about conditions and overcrowding in
Italian prisons, following a spate of suicides among inmates and
a series of episodes of unrest. (ANSA).
