(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 5 - Pope Francis on Tuesday paid a rare
home visit to former foreign minister Emma Bonino.
Sources close to Bonino said the visit was an "unexpected and
pleasant surprise" and the politician later wrote on Instagram
that the pontiff had brought her flowers and a box of
chocolates.
She was released from hospital last month after suffering from
respiratory problems.
Pope Francis, 87, was seen visiting her apartment in central
Rome after he paid a visit earlier in the morning to the
Gregorian University, the oldest of the Roman pontifical
universities.
The pontiff and Bonino have met frequently over the years, often
to discuss about migration.
In 2016, Francis included Bonino "among Italy's greats today".
