(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 12 - Catholic charity Caritas said in its
annual survey on poverty and social exclusion in Italy published
on Tuesday that nearly 5.7 million people live in absolute
poverty, or about one-tenth of the population.
"Absolute poverty in Italy affects almost 5.7 million people,
nearly a tenth of the population.
"The analysis of data has revealed that underpaid and
intermittent labour is widespread, with low salaries and
atypical contracts preventing a dignified life", the study said.
Young people and families with children are among the most
vulnerable, Caritas noted.
The study in particular highlighted that housing represents an
emergency in this context, with vulnerable families at risk of
finding themselves without a home or in inadequate housing
conditions.
In addition, "access to education and new technologies has
become an illusion" for many - a situation that "fuels
inequality", Caritas stressed. (ANSA).
