(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 18 - Italy is top in the Europe when it
comes to deaths caused by infections from antibiotic-resistant
bacteria, accounting for around 12,000 of the 35 000 people who
die in the EU/EEA because if this each year, the European Centre
for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in a report on
Monday.
The report, released on European Antibiotic Resistance Day, said
that antibiotic consumption in the EU increased by 1% between
2019 and 2023, moving the bloc away from its target of a 20%
reduction by 2030 in order to combat antimicrobial resistance
(AMR).
It said that, if the trend is not reverses, AMR will become the
leading cause of death in Italy by 2050, overtaking
cardiovascular disease and cancer. (ANSA).
