Calls to women's anti-violence helpline up 57%

Big rise since shocking femicide of 22-yr-old Giulia Cecchettin

(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 24 - Calls to the 1522 anti-violence and anti-stalking helpline of premier office's equal opportunities department amounted to a 48,000 in the first nine months of 2024, an increase of 57% with respect to the 30,581 registered in the equivalent period last year, according to figures released on Sunday.
    The number includes contacts made via app and chat messages.
    The data shows that there has been a big increase in use of the helpline since the shocking femicide of 22-year-old of Giulia Cecchettin, who was brutally stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend in November 2023.
    There was a peak in calls to the helpline in November and December last year, with an average of 800 contacts per day.
