(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 2 - The State attorney's office in the northeastern city of Udine has officially placed under investigation three firefighters and a nurse who works for the local 112 emergency service in connection with the deaths of Patrizia Cormos, Bianca Doros and Cristian Molnar who drowned due to the flooding of the Natisone river amid extreme weather in May, chief prosecutor Massimo Lia confirmed to ANSA on Monday.
The investigation focused on those who managed the emergency and not on the personnel that operated on the ground, judicial sources said.
None of the firefighters who intervened and tried to save the young people's lives is under investigation, they said.
The three, aged between 20 and 25, got trapped on a small island in the Natisone river when water levels suddenly rose up following flash floods in the north-eastern Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
A harrowing video of the friends holding each other in an attempt to resist as the flow of water got more violent moved the nation at the time. (ANSA).
