Germany sentenced to pay 4 mn for WWII massacre

(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 9 - An appeals court in the Abruzzo city of L'Aquila on Monday ruled that Germany must pay four million euros in compensation to 30 relatives of victims of the World War II massacre of Pietransieri.
    The court sentenced the Federal Republic of Germany, the German foreign ministry to pay the sum to relatives who had not been previously compensated for the massacre.
    The ruling followed the supreme Court of Cassation's decision that compensation could be paid to victims' relatives individually and not necessarily as part of a class action suit.
    Overall, compensation paid to victims' families including previous cases totals 15 million euros.
    The sum will be paid over the coming months as part funding for Nazi crimes of the European Union's post-COVID Recovery Fund for its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).
    A total of 128 civilians were killed on November 21, 1943 in the woods of Limmari by Nazi troops who suspected they supported partisan fighters.
    The victims in Pietransieri included 60 women, 34 children under the age of 10 and many elderly men and women. (ANSA).
