(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 9 - Two prison officers have been placed
under investigation over the suicide of a 21-year-old Tunisian
inmate at Genoa's Marassi Prison on December 4, sources said
Monday.
The young man, Amir Dhouiou, accused of theft and resisting
arrest, hanged himself in the bathroom of his cell.
Dhouiou had already tried to kill himself and had been placed in
a surveillance ward.
Investigators said they would be looking into whether measures
taken to prevent another suicide attempt had been adequate and
sufficient.
Inmate suicides are up in Italy amid worsening conditions and
endemic overcrowding. (ANSA).
