101 migrants rescued by Ocean Viking reach Taranto

Ship's passengers included 29, women, 23 unaccompanied minors

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 13 - The migrant-rescue vessel Ocean Viking operated by the NGO Sos Mediterranee on Monday reached the Puglia port of Taranto with 101 migrants on board rescued Friday in the Mediterranean.
    The passengers - including 29 women and 23 unaccompanied minors one of whom is a year old - have disembarked, the organization said.
    Despite the difficult weather conditions with high seas and waves of up to 2.5 metres, the migrants were in good condition.
    Operations to identify and welcome the migrants, including carrying out medical checkups, were coordinated by the prefecture of Taranto.
    The migrants include 32 Somalis, 26 Syrians, 15 Eritreans, 13 Egyptians, six Palestinians, three Sudanese, two Iraqis and an Ethiopian.
    The migrants were rescued on Friday aboard a wooden boat in the Libyan search and rescue (SAR) zone.
    They will be taken to a number of destinations outside Taranto, local authorities said. (ANSA).
