Train disruption as bad weather batters South

Circulation on Reggio Calabria-Salerno line suspended

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 14 - Rail services across southern Italy were disrupted on Tuesday due to line closures from heavy rain, dangerous water levels and strong winds with at least nine high-speed trains totally or partially cancelled and delays of up to 350 minutes, or nearly six hours, among others.
The disruption was particularly significant in Calabria.
Trains connecting Reggio Calabria, Paola and Salerno were cancelled after bad weather resulted in the closure of the line.
Services between San Lucido, Diamante and Paola, in the province of Cosenza, were also suspended, rail operator Trenitalia said.
Strong winds aused the presence of dangerous metallic objects along some lines and the suspension of rail travel, it added, explaining that technicians of Italian rail agency Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) were working to repair the damage.
