Italian literature, history more central as of 2026-27

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 15 - A new school syllabus for the 2026-27 academic year will introduce Latin as an option for middle school students and give a more central role to Italian literature and history, Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara told Milan daily Il Giornale in an interview published on Wednesday.
Latin will be offered as an option for second and third-year middle school students under the new syllabus.
One of the main changes, however, will be introduced for high school students with the abolition of 'geo-history' as a subject matter, the minister told the newspaper.
The idea is for students to develop a concept of history as a great narration "without ideological prejudice", focusing on the history of Italy, Europe and the West, said Valditara in the interview.
Special attention will also be devoted to Italian populations, ancient Greece and Rome and the first centuries of Christianity, he explained. (ANSA).
