Sinner not to go to Quirinale Palace on Wednesday

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 28 - Jannik Sinner will not be at a ceremony at the presidential Quirinale palace in Rome on Wednesday to be attended by members of the Italian Tennis Federation to celebrate a successful 2024 with President Sergio Mattarella, sources close to the player said on Tuesday. After his Australian Open victory, the tennis champion had said he "still needed to decide" whether to attend the ceremony but made up his mind after returning from Australia, the sources said.
    Sinner said Monday after retaining his Aussie crown to win his third grand slam title and become Italy's most successful tennis player ever Sunday that now he would rest for a while and then return to focusing on tennis 100%.
    "Now we have some free time.
    "Then, when we get back to work, tennis will have 100% of our attention again," said the 23-year-old South Tyrolean world number on the sidelines of a photo shoot with the Australian Open trophy in Melbourne.
    Sinner, who beat Germany's world number two Alexander Zverev in straight sets without dropping a break point to pass Nicola Pietrangeli's record of two slams, has now pulled away at the top of the ATP rankings, 3,700 points ahead of the German.
