Mom, grandma of hospitalized kids probed over alleged abuse

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 31 - The mother and grandmother of two brothers aged four and two who are currently hospitalized in the paediatric surgical ward of the Annunziata Hospital in Cosenza over fractures and lesions suspected of having been caused by beatings and abuse are being probed by the State attorney's office in in the Calabrian city of Paola.
    Prosecutors have issued an urgent restraining order against the two women who are under investigation on charges of domestic abuse and personal injury.
    Neither of the two women will be allowed to see the toddlers who are not in life-threatening condition, medical sources said.
    The two brothers have been placed under the temporary care of a tutor, the head of the hospital's paediatric surgical department, doctor Fawzi Shweiki.
    The mother and grandmother have denied any form of abuse.
