M5S not to attend pro-Europe demo on March 15

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 4 - Ex premier and populist 5-Star Movement (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte on Tuesday said his party would not take part in a pro-Europe march scheduled to take place on March 15 in Rome.
"For what? For which Europe", Conte told reporters, speaking about the demonstration after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen launched a plan to 'rearm Europe' in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine that she said could mobilise close to 800 billion euros.
"Von der Leyen's Europe? Now it is necessary to take a position on this.
"Our ideas are clear, they are for a Europe that invests on citizens, a greener and more supportive Europe, not the Europe of rearmament, not the Europe of weapons", said Conte.
The idea of an apolitical march for the "unity and freedom" of Europe was first launched by journalist Michele Serra in an appeal published by Rome daily La Repubblica. (ANSA).
