No Italian troops in potential Kyiv missions says Meloni

'Commitment to work with EU, U.S. for peace solution'

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 15 - Premier Giorgia Meloni on Saturday stressed that no Italian troops would be deployed in a potential peacekeeping operation in Ukraine during a virtual meeting hosted by British Premier Keir Starmer.
    "No national participation is scheduled in a potential military force on the ground", Meloni said during the virtual meeting on Ukraine.
    Meloni attended the online call organized by Starmer to discuss the commitment for a fair and enduring peace ensuring the future sovereignty and security of Ukraine.
    In this context, the premier said Italy intends to continue to work with European and Western partners and with the United States to define credible and effective security guarantees.
    Meloni spoke on the phone with Starmer before attending the virtual meeting he hosted with several international leaders in the so-called 'coalition of the willing' committed to guaranteeing a truce in Ukraine.
    Representatives of 26 countries, plus Nato and the EU, took part in the virtual call, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney and Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte.
