Bernini elephant statue in Rome damaged

Piece of tusk found on ground in Piazza della Minerva

(ANSA) - Rome, November 14 - A charming Rome statue of a little elephant by great Baroque sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini was damaged by vandals overnight, sources said on Monday. Part of one of the elephant's tusks was broken off and the piece was found at the foot of the statue in Rome's Piazza della Minerva, near the Pantheon.
    Police and experts from the Rome Culture Superintendency intervened as soon as the damage was detected.
