(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 16 - Theatre events at the iconic Ancient
Greek temples at Taormina in Sicily will stop from July 1 due to
lack of regional funding, Mayor Cateno De Luca said Friday.
The mayor said he is preparing an ordinance to suspend major
events at the Teatro Antico from 1 July, in the so-called Pearl
of the Ionian Sea.
"The President of the (Sicily) Region, Renato Schifani," says
the mayor, "has in fact denied the negotiations I was having
with his councillor for Culture on the costs we incur to
guarantee public order, decorum and cleanliness. I am forced to
issue an ordinance to ban major events at the Ancient Theatre
from 1 July onwards, considering that I am responsible for
public order, as the police chief and prefect always remind me".
The ancient Greek theatre puts on acclaimed Greek plays every
summer. (ANSA).
