(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 15 - A new law has earmarked hundreds of
thousands of euros to set up commemorations of the 100th
anniversary of the foundation of the City of the Duce, Latina
nèe Littoria, south of Rome in the Pontine Marshes reclaimed by
Mussolini in 1932.
The 2032 events will underscore "Italian rationalist
architecture, the land reclamations, the welcome given to
settlers form northern Italy, intercultural dialogue and
historic reflection, both at a national and international level,"
sharing information with other new towns founded in the 1930,
official said Sunday.
Latina is now the capital of the eponymous province, the second
biggest in Lazio after Rome.
It was one of several towns set up after the swamps were drained
in the 20s and 30s by the Fascist dictator, also including
Pontinia, Aprilia, and the lovely seaside Sabaudia, still a
haunt for left-leaning Roman literati, glitterati and other
cultural heavyweights.
