Italy's blue-flag resorts rise to 236

14 new entries but four municipalities lose their flags

(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 14 - The number of Italian seaside and lakeside resorts awarded the prestigious blue flag designation for cleanliness and sustainability has risen by 10 to 236 this year, the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) said in its annual report on Tuesday.
    There were 14 Italian new entries, but four municipalities lost their flags.
    Liguria remains top of the podium in Italy with 34 blue-flag resorts, with two new entries making up for two that lost their flags.
    Puglia is up to 24 with three new municipalities and one exit.
    Campania and Calabria follow with 20 flags each, both with one more than last year..
    The report said Italy had around 11.5% of the world's beaches that are able to fly the flag.
    The number of Italian lakeside blue-flag locations is 23.
    The number of Italian blue flag tourist ports, however, dropped from 84 to 81. (ANSA).
