Italy defends universal human rights and multilateralism

(ANSA) - GINEVRA, 19 GIU - "The protection and promotion of human rights and the fight against all forms of discrimination are an established priority of Italy's foreign policy, in accordance with our Constitution," Italy's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, said today. Speaking as part of the Interactive Dialogue on the annual report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, within the framework of the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Ambassador Grassi stressed that "as reaffirmed by the G7 Leaders under the Italian Presidency last week", Italy believes "firmly in democratic principles and free societies, universal human rights, social progress, respect for multilateralism and the rule of law". In line with international law and the UN Charter, 'we will continue to support Ukraine's struggle for freedom and its reconstruction for as long as necessary,' he added.
    Ambassador Grassi - a press release from the Representation states - recalled that "Italy has always been at the forefront of the international campaign for a universal moratorium on executions, as a first step towards the abolition of the death penalty" and condemns "discrimination, violence and persecution against religious and ethnic minorities, such as Christian communities". In conclusion, he emphasised the need to "intensify our joint efforts to address global challenges, including human trafficking and the root causes of irregular migration".
    The Permanent Representative also stated that "in a spirit of equal and strategic partnership, we are committed to intensifying our support to African countries in their efforts to achieve sustainable development, strengthen democratic governance, and contribute to global stability and prosperity". Italy is also 'committed to strengthening global food security and enhancing climate resilience, including through the launch of the Apulia Food Systems Initiative,' he continued.
