(ANSA) - ROMA, 01 LUG - Carlo Formosa took up the post of Italian ambassador to Kiev today, a Farnesina note announced. Formosa was born in Rome on 28 March 1963 and holds a degree in Political Science from Luiss University.
In 1992, he began his career at the Farnesina in the General Directorate for Economic Affairs, where he worked on Eastern European countries (including Ukraine), Central Asia and, in particular, on the upgrading of Italy's financial assistance to the countries that had become independent from the USSR.
In 1995, Formosa left to serve first at the Embassy in Hanoi, in a phase characterised by the relaunch of Vietnam's projection on the regional and international scene, and then at the Embassy in Tehran, coinciding with the strong intensification of bilateral relations during President Khatami's first term in office. In November 2001, he led the Italian diplomatic delegation to Kabul for the preparation and implementation of the first Italian government visit to Afghanistan, in the aftermath of the fall of the Taliban regime.
Returning to Rome in 2003, Formosa was first Head of the Secretariat of the Directorate General for the Mediterranean and Middle East, and then Director of the Department for the Near East and the Peace Process, participating in the organisation of the 2006 Rome International Conference that redefined the Unifil mandate in terms of overcoming hostilities in Lebanon.
He left again for foreign countries in 2009 to coordinate the political dossiers of the Italian Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York during a period of extraordinary UN activism in major international crisis areas.
Formosa returned to Rome in 2013 as head of the Secretariat of the Deputy Foreign Minister, and then with the role of Deputy Director General for the Country System and Central Director for Internationalisation, dealing with the definition and adoption of the new concept of integrated promotion that brings under the coordination of the Farnesina all the components of the Italian System in support of the internationalisation of Italian companies. Since 2017, he has been seconded to the private sector as Executive Vice President and Director of International Relations of Leonardo S.p.A. From 4 January 2020 to April 2024, Formosa is ambassador of Italy to Portugal, and from today 1 July 2024 he is ambassador of Italy to Ukraine.
