(ANSA) - ROMA, 03 LUG - The new Italian ambassador to Beirut, Fabrizio Marcelli, visited the base of the Italian contingent of the UN mission in Lebanon (Unifil), where he was welcomed by the commander of the Taurinense Brigade, General Enrico Fontana, who heads the western sector of the international military mission.
The visit took place at the Shamaa base, close to the front line between Hezbollah and Israel. As reported by the Italian Embassy in Beirut, in Shamaa, Ambassador Marcelli "met with the soldiers of the Italian contingent to whom he expressed support and solidarity for the work they are carrying out in this complex juncture in favour of peace and stability in Lebanon".
"The visit," reads the communiqué, "was also an opportunity for General Fontana and his staff to provide an operational update on the context in which the western sector of Unifil is operating and on the activities that Italian peacekeepers carry out every day in adherence to Resolution 1701, in particular the civil-military cooperation (Cimic) activities that benefit the local populations.
The visit took place on the 31st anniversary of the death of the gold medalist for military valour, Lieutenant Andrea Millevoi, who died during the UN peacekeeping mission in Somalia, and after whom the Italian blue helmets' base in southern Lebanon is named.
