(ANSA) - BUENOS AIRES, 12 SET - After the meeting of Italian ski champions in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, the Italian Embassy in Buenos Aires organised, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Buenos Aires and the Club Atlético River Plate, another meeting to celebrate the 'Day of Italian Sport in the World'.
A few metres from River Plate's famous 'Mâs Monumental' Stadium, around 200 students from Italian schools in Buenos Aires were able to take advantage of a day in contact with one of Argentina's most famous clubs with strong Italian roots, including many Italians and descendants among its founders. The words of the River Plate authorities, Ambassador Fabrizio Lucentini and Consul General Carmelo Barbera were followed by those of the 1978 World Champion with Argentina's Selección, Ubaldo Matildo 'Pato' Fillol, and Jorge Gordillo, one of the Club's current coaches and former Copa Libertadores winner with River.
The speakers presented the new thematic review of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and emphasised Italy's closeness to the Club and the friendship that links River Plate with Torino FC, following the Superga tragedy in 1949. They also dwelt on the values that characterise sport, such as teamwork, solidarity and determination to overcome obstacles.
The tale of the two River Plate glories was followed by a round of questions from some of the Italian school students present, who were enthusiastic about getting to know emblematic former players from the history of Argentinean football. The visit to the 'Mâs Monumental' Stadium, which River Plate kindly offered to all participants, was the crowning glory of a day dedicated to sport and friendship between Italy and Argentina.
