(ANSA) - PARIGI, 15 OTT - Keeping memory alive in the name of dialogue and peace: a ceremony was held at the Italian military memorial in Soupir, in the French department of Aisne, in honour of the Italian soldiers who fell in France during the First World War. During the ceremony, the Consul General of Italy in France, Jacopo Albergoni, remembered the 592 Italian soldiers who "sacrificed their lives during the First World War'' in this place. Men "belonging to the Second Army Corps led by General Albricci, who came all the way to France to face terrible fighting alongside their French brothers-in-arms, thus contributing to the liberation of the village of Soupir and the Chemin des Dames,'' the diplomat continued, celebrating the fallen "Italians and French united by a common destiny, in a conflict that profoundly marked the history of our peoples and of Europe. In front of representatives of the two countries, as well as students from the Leonardo Da Vinci state school in Paris and other French schools, a wreath with red and green white rosettes was laid in homage to the fallen. In his speech, the consul emphasised, among other things, the importance of the European Union, ''a symbol of hope and unity, founded on the values of peace and communion among peoples'' as well as the friendship between France and Italy, ''a friendship,'' the consul pointed out, ''made even deeper by the Quirinal Treaty, which opens the way to a far-reaching reinforced cooperation, to face the challenges of the present and the future. Faced with the horror of wars, including the one in Ukraine that has once again lacerated the European continent, he finally insisted on the 'crucial importance of memory to build a world of dialogue and peace'.
