'Italy is closely following the crises in Haiti and Venezuela'

Intervention by Ambassador Roberto Nocella at the OSA Council

(ANSA) - RIO DE JANEIRO, 06 DIC - There are two crises in Latin American countries that 'the Italian government is closely following in all multilateral fora and within its G7 presidency: the one in Haiti and the one in Venezuela'. This was said by Ambassador Roberto Nocella, Italy's permanent observer at the Organisation of American States (OAS), during the OAS Council meeting underway in Washington.
In particular, in relation to the situation in Caracas, Mr. Nocella pointed out that "Italy is deeply concerned about the ongoing violations and abuses of human rights, including arbitrary detentions and serious restrictions on fundamental freedoms, which especially affect political opponents, civil society and independent media", following the disputed presidential elections on 28 July. Elections in which, Nocella continues, 'the Venezuelan people clearly expressed themselves at the ballot box, voting for democratic change and supporting Edmundo González Urrutia with a significant majority'. Despite the fact that the Venezuelan authorities never presented the election records proving Nicolas Maduro's re-election, the outgoing president was officially reconfirmed by the electoral justice and the Supreme Court.
In conclusion, Nocella emphasised the Italian government's intention to organise another major conference between Italy and Latin America and the Caribbean in the autumn of 2025.
