(ANSA) - ROMA, 17 DIC - "The Italy-USA bilateral relationship is very solid. The United States is our main ally and partner outside Europe" and with the new Trump administration "there are no reasons why this relationship cannot continue to develop as it has so far". This was underlined by Italy's ambassador to Washington, Mariangela Zappia, on the sidelines of the annual Ambassadors' Conference at the Farnesina.
"The transatlantic alliance is the backbone of our foreign policy," she added, "it is part of our value system and over the years the relationship with the United States has always developed positively.
The ambassador said she was confident that even with the new Trump administration "this extraordinary relationship will continue. Whether we talk about geopolitical relations, economic policy all the data are positive with a trend that has been growing exponentially in recent years and not only in the sectors of the leading production systems but also in the frontiers of technology, artificial intelligence and space. We could say that everything that is innovation sees Italy and the US together'.
This does not mean, the ambassador points out, 'underestimating the declarations of Trump, who has announced that he wants to use tariffs and duties as foreign policy tools to direct relations between states. And a protectionist policy that tends to re-establish a position of US dominance in the world. We have already been through this with the last Trump administration,' says Zappia, 'and the most rational and positive attitude I think is the pragmatic one. Keep a cool head and see on the basis of what our needs are what we have to offer, where we can increase our spending to develop the bilateral relationship'.
