(ANSAmed) - IL CAIRO, 16 GEN - (ANSAmed) - CAIRO, JANUARY 16 - Salcef Group, a company that "designs, develops and manufactures solutions for sustainable mobility", has signed an agreement "to establish a public/private capital company under Egyptian law that will be responsible for developing railway infrastructure in Egypt, Africa and the entire Middle East" (Mo). This was announced in a statement released in Cairo.
"In addition to its subsidiary Salcef, the shareholding also includes Egyptian National Railways (Enr), Egypt's public railway operator that operates along the country's more than 5,000 km of lines," it added.
Salcef, controlled by the Salciccia family, has been operating in Egypt since 2011 and 'has successfully carried out numerous projects such as the renovation of over 340 km of track on the Cairo - Aswan and Cairo - Alexandria lines, which are among the most important in the country,' the note recalls. The group is currently involved in the construction of 600 km of track along the new high-speed line from Alexandria to Marsa Matrouh.
Speaking at the ceremony, Michele Quaroni, Italy's ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt, commented: 'I welcome the signing of this important agreement between the Salcef group and the Egyptian railways, which will strengthen the presence of Italian companies in the Egyptian railway sector, which is the subject of major investments by the government,' the note said.
"As evidence of the fruitful and long-lasting cooperation between Italy and Egypt - also in line with the Mattei Plan launched by the Italian government - I am convinced that Salcef's expertise and technological excellence can contribute tangibly to the development of the country and the strengthening of economic relations between Italy and Egypt," concluded the ambassador.
For his part, Valeriano Salciccia, Managing Director of Salcef Group, commented: "The agreement signed today represents an important step for the consolidation of Salcef's role as a primary interlocutor for the maintenance and development of the railway infrastructure in Egypt".
"The country has been one of the main markets for the group for 15 years and we are therefore proud of the partnership with Egyptian National Railways, which will allow us to provide our best skills, machinery and experience to accompany the country in the development of its railway mobility system," the CEO added.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Industry, Kamel El Wazir; the Deputy Minister of Transport, Wagdy Radwan; and the President of Enr, Mohamed Amer.
Salcef employs more than 2,000 people, has a fleet of more than 1,100 rail machines, and achieved a consolidated turnover of €795m in 2023, the statement recalled. Headquartered in Rome, it also has an industrial presence in Germany and the US, and is commercially active on five continents with six production sites, five of which are in Italy and one in the US.
