League announces motion to ban burkini

In the line of burqa-ban in hospitals

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Milan, August 17 - After Northern League leader Matteo Salvini called on the mayors of all coastal towns to ban the burkini, a full-length Islamic swimming garment, the party has announced a motion to be filed with the Lombardy regional council to do so at all the beaches and pools in the region.
The ban would be similar to one brought in late last year in the region, Italy's wealthiest, on burqas and niqabs in hospitals and government buildings.
The document will be presented in September and will ask municipalities, lake authorities and managers of waterparks to share access rules and provide for preferential treatment in regional tourism competitions for those that introduce a ban on the "burkini" in their regulations for access to pools, beaches and swimming resorts. "While waiting for a more sensible, courageous government to arrive in Rome," the deputy head of the party Fabio Rolfi said, "we need to act at the regional level in unison. There is the need to fight this dangerous political ideology that, with the excuse of religion, theorizes women's enslavement. These ideas cannot be tolerated or accepted" in Italy.
