Focus needs to be on preventing departures

(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 14 - Premier Giorgia Meloni and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Thursday agreed on the need "to act quickly and with determination" in response to the arrival of migrants and refugees to Europe.
"Migration is a common challenge for the European Union that requires a collective response," read a statement issued by the premier's office at Palazzo Chigi after their meeting in Budapest.
Meloni and Orban "reiterated the need to focus on the external dimension (of migration) to prevent departures, especially through decisive political and economic support to countries of origin and transit, greater efforts to fight human trafficking networks and an effective repatriation policy for those who have no right to remain in Europe," continued the statement.
"Conditionality mechanisms should also be implemented to ensure the cooperation of countries of origin," it added. (ANSA).
