Europe must show solidarity with Lampedusa - Borrell

(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 23 - The European Union (EU) must show solidarity with Italy as it struggles to manage an increase in the arrival of migrants and refugees to its southern shores, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Saturday.
    "We must show all our solidarity with Italy in a difficult moment," said Borrell in an interview with France 24 and Radio France International.
    "The European Union will stand by Italy," he added.
    Borrell affirmed "the need for border control with policies that go beyond security measures, and agreements with countries of origin and transit that allow us to receive the migration we need on a regular basis and also ensure the deportation of illegal migrants" who "risk their lives for nothing".
