(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 19 - Italy must avoid fuelling conflicts
by exporting weapons particularly to the Middle East because of
the risk of being used to commit war crimes, the leader of the
centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) Elly Schlein said
on Friday.
"We must face the issue of avoiding fuelling these conflicts, of
avoiding sending arms and exporting arms to conflicts, to the
conflict in the Middle East, in this case particularly to
Israel," said Schlein at the end of a meeting of PD lawmakers in
Gubbio.
This, she added, is because "we cannot risk weapons being used
to commit what could be construed as war crimes".
Tel Aviv is waging a military campaign to eliminate Hamas from
Gaza after the brutal and unprecedented October 7 attack on
Israel that killed some 1,200 people and took about 250
hostages.
The Hamas-run health ministry now says over 24,000 people have
been killed in the Palestinian enclave since the war began.
