(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 23 - The president of the Union of Italian
Jewish Communities (UCEI), Noemi Di Segni, said Tuesday that
the annual Marathon for Memory in remembrance of the victims of
the Holocaust has fallen through "for security reasons",
denouncing the fact that neo-Fascists can instead "demonstrate
freely".
"For security reasons we have not been able to organize the
marathon for memory," said Di Segni, presenting the programme of
events sponsored by the Prime Minister's Office for
International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Saturday.
"Those who raise their arms in the Fascist salute and the
extreme-right squadristi of the social centres are free to
demonstrate, as if protected by a constitutional freedom," she
continued.
"It is aberrant that citizens cannot run freely," added Di
Segni, demanding that attention be paid to the "commitment to
consistency".
"Two cities in Calabria" were involved in organizing the
marathon, she concluded. (ANSA).
