(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 27 - When the people vote they are always right, rightwing League leader , Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said after a disappointing showing for his anti-migrant party in Sunday's Sardinian elections and the victory of centre-left governor candidate Alessandra Todde of the leftist populist 5-Star Movement (M5S).
"After five consecutive victories (in other regional elections) a defeat can be expected," said the League chief.
"When the people vote, they are always right.
"This does not change my commitment as a minister to the Sardinians.
"I will, of course, continue to do everything that the Sardinians expect and deserve.
"When you win you win all together, when you lose you lose all together." "The numbers say that the centre-right has increased its votes compared to the (2022) general election, that the League and the Sardinian Action Party have increased by three points, but the M5S candidate has won.
"In a democracy it is fair". (ANSA).
