(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 24 - Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti
said Friday that the European Union should consider taking
measures like those imposed by the United States to protect its
businesses from unfair competition.
The US recently announced new tariffs on $18 billion of imports
from China, saying this was necessary to protect American
workers and businesses.
It said China was flooding global markets with artificially
low-priced exports and conducting unfair trade practices
concerning technology transfer, intellectual property, and
innovation.
"(Access to) the free market should be granted to those who
respect fundamental rights, this must be clear," Giorgetti told
Rai television in Stresa, where he is chairing the G7 Finance
Meeting.
" There are geopolitical and geo-economic systems that create
unfair competition.
"The United States has taken very powerful decisions and Europe
will probably have to do the same". (ANSA).
