(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 10 - The murder of Giacomo Matteotti was an attack on parliament, President Sergio Mattarella said on the 100th anniversary of the assassination by Fascist thugs of the Socialist MP who 11 days previously had denounced Fascist election fraud and violence in the Lower House.
"The kidnapping, one hundred years ago, of the Socialist MP Giacomo Matteotti, which was followed by his cruel, barbaric murder, was an attack on Parliament and on the freedom of all Italians and represented a watershed in national history," said the head of State.
"The violence that had immediately characterised the actions of the fascist movement, after the attacks on workers organised in trade unions and cooperatives, against the institutions, from the Communes turned to Parliament.
"That political assassination took on a peculiar historical and symbolic significance.
"The State was enslaved by an armed party that was becoming a regime, with the complicity of the Monarchy".
The seat in the House from which Matteotti made his 'death speech' on May 30, 2024 has now been left vacant forever.
Premier Giorgia Meloni said on the anniversary of the famous speech that Matteotti had been killed by Fascist thugs. (ANSA).
