Never made a decision I'm ashamed of says Meloni

National interest is my only compass says premier

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 3 - Premier Giorgia Meloni has said she stands by all the decisions she has made since becoming Italy's first woman head of government in 2022 in an interview published on Friday in daily newspaper Corriere della Sera's '7' supplement.
"Everything can be perfected, but I have no regrets or remorse because we have never given less than everything over the last two and a half years," said Meloni, the leader of the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party.
"And I have never made a decision that I should be ashamed of.
"With every step there is always the risk of a stumble, but this is not a good reason to stand still.
"The Italians have called on us to govern Italy at an extremely complex time.
"We have always tried to move following one compass, the national interest".
She said that, under her administration, Italy has regained the confidence of international investors and the financial markets.
"What some had hoped would be the weak points of this government have become its strengths," she continued.
"Of course this does not mean that everything is going well in Italy and that all the problems have been resolved.
"But there has been a change of direction. Having said this, I am still convinced that we must, and can, always do more and do better".
She said one of her government's strengths was its "capacity to dialogue with everyone.
"Over these two years we have strengthened our traditional alliances, but we have also opened channels of dialogue with partners with whom we previously spoken little to or with whom relationships were less intense," she continued.
"And this is a great added value, which allows Italy to diversify its geopolitical and geo-economic standing.
"Think about the new partnership we have established with India: until a few years ago there was a ban on Italian companies there, now our relationships have completely changed, and this is offering us great opportunities in previously unexplored fields, from economic interconnections to the development of biofuels, for example".
