I didn't shoot my jailer, became woman of peace - Segre

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 28 - Holocaust survivor and Life Senator Liliana Segre told a Remembrance Day event at the presidential Quirinale Palace Tuesday that she had not shot her jailer at Auschwitz and had become a woman of peace instead.
    "Fortunately, I didn't pick up that gun and I became a woman of peace, for life", she said in recalling the moment of her choice not to pick up the gun thrown to the ground by her jailer on May 1, 1945, when the doors of the Auschwitz concentration camp opened, and the camp's kapos took off their uniforms, drove the dogs away and tried to mingle with the survivors.
    Segre spoke in the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, and the highest offices of the State, for the celebrations of the Day of Remembrance. (ANSA).
