Fears from attacks and doubts on reform -ANM to Mattarella

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 26 - Magistrates union ANM said after meeting President Sergio Mattarella Wednesday that they had voiced to the head of sate and titular head of the Italian judiciary their fears over attacks from politicians and doubts about a reform separating their career paths so they can no longer switch between being prosecutors and judges.
"We expressed our concern to President Mattarella about the frequent attacks directed at the judiciary in recent months and we had the opportunity to highlight what we believe are the critical issues that the adoption of certain constitutional interventions on the protection of citizens' rights would bring, reiterating the technical reasons for not sharing the changes that the reform would like to bring", the Central Executive Committee of the National Association of Magistrates said.
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio is determined to press ahead with the Constitutional reform, which will require a referendum, and has repeatedly denied the ANM's assertions that the plan is aimed at bringing prosecutors under executive control.
