Scientists make human sperm breakthrough

Technique could help preserve fertility in child chemotherapy pa

(ANSA) - Rome, September 17 - Human sperm has for the first time ever been created entirely in a test tube using tissue from a sterile man, French scientists said Thursday. The in vitro sperm was obtained from tissue taken from the testes. The technique developed by scientists of Kallistem, a start-up of the French national research centre, could help preserve fertility in children having to undergo potentially dangerous treatments such as chemotherapy.
It could also be used to treat infertility in some cases. "We hope the first centres will make the technique available within five years," said Kallistem President Isabelle Cuoc.
