Inflammation damages memory

Could pave way for new Alzheimer's, dementia treatments

(ANSA) - Rome, December 10 - An Italian neuroscientist has discovered that inflammation damages memory and could be responsible for cognitive losses in patients with Alzheimer's, dementia, multiple sclerosis and other nerve diseases.
Astrocyte cells in the central nervous system react to signs of inflammation by causing nervous in the brain's memory center, or hyppocampus, to malfunction, according to Professor Andrea Volterra from the Lausanne University Department of Cell Biology and Morphology.
"This discovery could pave the way for new drugs capable of penetrating the brain...and being effective against one of the principal symptoms of dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases," Volterra told ANSA.
His findings were published in Cell journal.
