(ANSA) - Milan, December 28 - Surgeons used a robot to
excise a cancerous prostate gland from a patient in the first
operation of its kind in Italy, hospital specialists at Milanìs
San Raffaele Turro Hospital said Monday.
The operation performed on a 56-year-old man with a single
tiny cut was the "first case in Italy of robotic radical
prostatectomy" substituting for the standard procedure requiring
six incisions, they said.
Prostate cancer is the most common solid tumour in western
countries and the second cause of death among men after lung
cancer.
