(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 4 - Lucia Margheriti is the new director of the national earthquake observatory (ONT) of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Rome.
In office since January 1, she has taken over from Salvatore Stramondo, who led the ONT for seven years.
"It is an honour for me to take up this position at INGV and to make my contribution in coordinating my colleagues at the national earthquake observatory," said Margheriti, a first researcher at INGV and former head of the ONT's Functional Unit Operations Room.
"I will undertake this task with passion and commitment," she added.
"I hope to further promote scientific research in the field of seismology and earth sciences, collaborating with the ONT's competent and talented team. Together we will pursue scientific objectives, strengthen infrastructure and carry out seismic surveillance and tsunami warning services," said Margheriti.
The ONT is responsible for the national seismic surveillance and tsunami warning service and for the dissemination of information at national, regional and sometimes also global level.
Under Margheriti's leadership, the ONT "will continue to excel in seismic monitoring and surveillance and in the understanding of the Earth's dynamics that so greatly influence Italy," said INGV President Carlo Doglioni. (ANSA).
