(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 4 - Doctors at Florence's Meyer hospital
have constructed the nose of a five-year-old boy who was born
without one, copying the nose of his twin brother with 3D
printing.
The boy was born premature at 28 weeks without a nasal pyramid
due to perinatal complications.
As a result, instead of a nose, he had two holes in his face
which he breathed though.
His parents turned to the hospital for help, fearing the lack of
a nose cold cause him emotional and social suffering.
The Aou Meyer Irccs team led by Dr. Flavio Facchini used modern
scanning techniques to scan the twin's nose, print a copy with
the cooperation of the T3Ddy (www.t3ddy.org) laboratory, and put
it into position with two operations, the first of which latest
seven hours.
"Everything went very well," the boy's mother said.
"This encounter with the Meyer hospital gave our child his
self-confidence back and the hope of a normal life, like that of
his twin.
"Looking at himself, he says 'Now I'm really like my little
brother and my classmates'". (ANSA).
