Swimming: Martinenghi gets gold in 50m breaststroke

Raises Italy's golden haul to 11

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 16 - Italy's Nicolò Martinenghi won the gold medal in the men's 50m breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships in Rome Tuesday.
    It was the Varese born 23-year-old's second gold after winning the 100m breaststroke.
    It raised Italy's gold haul to 11.
    Another Azzurro, Simone Cerasuolo, came second.
    Germany's Lucas Matzerath got the bronze.
    Italy got the gold and the bronze in the women's 1m springboard at the European Aquatics Championships in Rome earlier on Tuesday. Milan born Elena Bertocchi, 27, won the event, repeating her success in Budapest in 2020. Chiara Pellacani, a 19-year-old from Rome, came third. Sweden's Emma Gullstrand got the silver.
    Italy currently top the medal table at the championships with their 11 gold medals and are expected to get to at least 12 when star swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri contests the 1500m freestyle tonight after winning the 800m event at the weekend.
    The Italian gold-medal haul also include two from Simona Quadarella in the women's 800m and 1500m freestyle.
    The championships have two days to go, Tuesday and Wednesday.
