(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 17 - Italy's Simona Quadarella got the
gold medal in the 800 metres freestyle at the world
championships in Doha on Saturday.
It is her second gold medal in the current worlds after she won
the 1500 freestyle on Tuesday, qualifying for the Paris Olympics
later this year, and a record double gold for Italy.
"It was one of the most tiring races I have ever done but I am
really happy," the 25-year-old from Rome told Rai sport after
Saturday's victory.
"After the gold in the 1500, this is a wonderful world
championship. Now I can work calmly for the Olympics and I
really am very stimulated".
Quadarella also said she was "proud" to be only the second
Italian to have won the 800 freestyle, 51 years after Novella
Calligaris.
"I thought I wouldn't make it because the others started off
really strongly, but also thanks to experience I managed to
achieve this great result," she added. (ANSA).
