(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 8 - Italy's Martina Caironi signed off on
her illustrious athletics career by winning the 100m in the T63
category in a dramatic at race the 2024 Paris Paralympics on
Saturday to complete a hat-trick of sprint golds after her
triumphs at Londra 2012 and Rio 2016.
The 34-year-old had said beforehand that it would be her last
race.
There was a shock finish to the race as Italy's Ambra Sabatini's
fell in the closing stages and hit her teammate Monica
Contrafatto, who still managed to tumble over the line in third
place and take bronze.
It meant the Azzurre were unable to repeat the podium sweep they
completed in Tokyo three years ago, when Sabatini took gold,
Caironi silver and Contrafatto bronze.
Italy went into the last day of action at the Paralympics with
70 medals, including 24 golds, meaning the previous record haul
set at Tokyo 2020 has been beaten. (ANSA).
